Introduction

Little Journey® is fully committed to building products that are accessible and inclusive for everyone. This means we strive to make our app usable for all, including individuals with disabilities, those requiring reasonable adjustments, and users who may not identify as disabled but still benefit from more accessible features. Our goal is to create both digital and offline experiences that work for everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, digital literacy, or the type of device/equipment they are using.

Accessibility efforts

In 2024, we partnered with Hassell Inclusion, a recognised leader in digital accessibility, to conduct two comprehensive audits of our app. These audits went beyond simply meeting the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards, focusing on usability for children, their caregivers, and people with varying levels of need. This collaboration has been instrumental in shaping our approach, helping us aim for the highest possible standards of accessibility.

Design and development

We have developed a design system that currently meets a minimum of WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA standards. These standards help make digital content accessible to people with a wide variety of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, and cognitive impairments.

Key features of our app include:

  • Compatibility with screen readers and keyboard navigation, supporting users with visual or motor impairments.
  • Improved video player experience, allowing users to jump to specific parts of an animation, view transcripts and turn subtitles on/off*.
  • Honouring native text sizes up to 200%.
  • Clear, simple navigation and content that is structured for ease of use.
  • Consistent styling and minimalistic content design, making it easy for users to find what they need.

*Please note, subtitles are currently provided for some animations within the app. We understand the importance of this feature for all users, not just those with hearing impairments, and are working towards including subtitles across all media content. While we cannot commit to a specific timeline yet, this is a key priority in our development roadmap.

User-centred testing

We take a user-centred approach to testing. There is a known relationship between neurodivergence and likelihood of having accessibility needs. Therefore, we collaborate with neurodivergent children during the design and development of our products. Their insights have been invaluable in making the app more intuitive and accessible. Moving forward, we plan to expand our testing to include children with a wider range of needs and disabilities, as well as gathering feedback from carers and other adults who may use or support the use of the app.

Ongoing commitment

Our dedication to accessibility is ongoing. We are in the process of establishing an Accessibility Centre of Excellence within our organisation. This initiative will allow us to train employees across the company in accessibility best practices and ensure that every feature of our product is designed with inclusivity in mind. For our users, this means continuous improvement in the accessibility of our content and quicker response times to enquiries related to accessibility.

Limitations and alternatives

We are transparent about any known limitations in our app and are committed to providing alternatives wherever possible. For example:

  • Currently, our onboarding process does not fully meet WCAG accessibility guidelines, but we are actively working on improvements and will soon be launching an accessible onboarding flow designed to better support all users.
  • While not all media currently includes subtitles, transcripts are available.
  • Some games or interactive features may not yet be fully accessible to all users, but we are actively working on alternatives.
  • Videos may autoplay audio from one to the next, but this can be paused manually.
  • Accessibility improvements will initially be rolled out across a selected majority of  pathways within the app, with the remaining pathways to be updated in future releases as part of our ongoing commitment to making Little Journey® fully accessible for all users.

We continue to monitor and address any barriers users may face, and we encourage feedback to help guide future improvements.
